Hmm. Maybe I'll pick it up after all. Less than 20 Euros on PSN for the whole package seems like a fair deal, and the Part 1 Special Edition really put me in the mood for more Guybrush!

We don't answer questions until there are at least three duplicate threads:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1142775

Anyway, the current MBP doesn't overheat, it runs hot. Overheating would mean it gets so hot that it flips the safety switch and turns itself off. The current complaint is that Apple did a piss-poor job applying thermal paste to the processor by putting way too much, causing the cpu to run hotter than it should. Apple is not the only manufacturer that does this, my Dad sets up laptops for businesses (usually HP) and has to reapply thermal paste pretty often. Don't let that discourage you from buying the current MBP.

Also it only runs really hot (i.e. the fans kick in full blast) while either gaming or during intense cpu activity such as video processing. For standard college stuff (web surfing, document editing, watching a streaming lecture) it runs quiet.

I would expect it to be released late this month or early next month if the usual timetable from seeding to release is followed. It is of course dependent on what bugs crop up and how long it takes to fix them, but 4-6 weeks after seeding seems pretty typical for these releases.

Hello, I was wondering if using an external Bluetooth gps antennae would work with ios4. Is there an API that would allow app devs to implement this? I know this works on a jailbroken iPod but I'm not sure if I want to do that.

    No idea, sorry. :(:o

    Powerbook Review

Ive owned my new Powerbook 15 for around 3 months now, I think its a little short of that but no need to be precise. I will be breaking the traditions of a standard review by putting my negative views first, thus anyone reading the review will finish on a good note.

    And finally, Enjoy.

    Negative Views
Fortunately my Powerbook has given me very little quibbles and has generally gave a very good impression, first of all the usual complaint, it gets a little too hot for comfort and by that I mean the comfort of my legs, work these things hard and they get really hot! Moving on from that which I consider very insignificant, the standard RAM of 256mb was a little less than I would have liked to see for the price and as we all know buying memory from Apple is hard on the credit cards but a simple purchase from Crucial managed to get me a nice 1GB. Lastly on negative points, the price, I think it could be a little bit lower for what your getting its difficult to justify the price but Im not complaining!

    The Packaging
In usual Apple fashion the packaging is impressive, the box was sturdy on the long traipse home and it has a little handle although I didnt take the risk and use it. On opening it is clear that this has been design well and everything is neatly arranged for convenience and protection. I must note that it comes with a polystyrene keyboard cover; I think this is worth keeping for future use.

    The Powerbook
Now were onto the good stuff, too be a little more exact on my specs I bought it on 80GB 5200 rpm hard drive, 256mb RAM, and its the 1.33Ghz model, unfortunately I opted out of having a backlit keyboard. After a few days I decided it needed more memory for what I wanted to do with it so I purchased two 512mb sticks from Crucial.
The main use for my Powerbook is graphics and print, so I use the standard programs, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, usually all running at the same time, the Powerbook performs very well and isnt sluggish at all although the rendering of large InDesign documents can be a little slow. Along with those programs iChat and Adium are always running and I have never experienced a problem with any of them.
Boot up times are quick, and just for the record it is yet to Kernel panic on me and I have never had to force quit and application, but the Finder has crashed a few times but this seems to be a problem with Illustrator saving into an open folder.
I know a few issues that I wanted covered when I was looking to purchase so Im going to try and cover them now, firstly the battery, I personally believe that the battery in my Powerbook is very good and with Airport on, brightness full, Bluetooth off and running iChat, iTunes, Safari and Adium I can easily get 3.5 hours out of it and even run over the 4 hour mark. Things that are a little more processor intensive can severely knock the battery life but it has never been an inconvenience to me and I do travel around a lot and use my Powerbook.
Wireless signal, I use my wireless connection almost all the time and on a second note at home my wireless base station is an Airport Express, I heard rumour that the signal in the PowerBooks was quite poor but I find it to be the exact opposite, it is absolutely excellent and through several walls I can easily have full or close to full signal from my Airport Express.
Other little niggles, I read about it being a G4 processor, I purchased my Powerbook being confident that a G5 Powerbook is a long way off and any revision would be in January 2005 and that didnt bother me, I also know that Tiger will run well on my system.
In terms of size and weight I cannot commend Apple enough on this one, it is truly amazing how thin my 15 Powerbook is and the screen size is perfect although I will be purchasing an external monitor to help with those large graphics and more important work colour wise.

    Conclusion
This was easily the best computer I have ever owned and certainly best Mac, if you are a design, musician or general computer use I highly recommend this too you, it performs well and with enough RAM can churn through almost anything you throw at it.
Well Ive finished this review in record time and its quite late so Im sure Ive missed a large amount of stuff out, if you are looking to purchase I hope this review has been helpful if you need to know anything else I will happily add to the review, send me a note or mail me at abrooks@spymac.com. Finally thank you very much and good day to you all.

I do want to do the job properly, hence me starting this thread. I am inquiring about which calibration kit works best. I have used the i1 display 2 and it seems to me to automatically calibrate. I was wondering if this is right. I am using the icc profiles for my epson 4900 and the epson media I am using but also want to get my screen correctly profiled in my workflow.
    thanks

Greetings! I live in a blended family (I use mac :apple:, roommate uses pc  - haven't converted her yet). She and I would like to live in harmony and use a shared desktop workstation.

I've hooked all external components (mouse, keyboard, printer) via USB to a Lenovo K33415 Port Replicator. NEC AccuSync LCD also connected to Port Replicator via VGA.

When I plug her PC in, it recognizes all components immediately. My MacBook recognizes all components except the monitor.

Do I have to use a Mini DisplayPort to connect the monitor to the Mac? Or can I make it work as is with the USB?

    Thank you sooooo much!!!! :o

Does the port replicator work with displaylink software? that's pretty much the standard for USB video: http://www.displaylink.com/ The os x driver is here: http://www.displaylink.com/support/mac_downloads.php

Note usb video is really slow to respond vs the displayport or dvi or vga because of the limited bandwidth and you will need the built-in screen on that macbook to install the driver but you should be able to watch youtube videos. Also, forget games, it does NO 3d.

If you don't need the best graphics, then buying a new GPU should be enough. ATI 5770 is only 250$ so if it can make your system last a year or two longer, it should be worth it.

Yeah, I was starting to consider this more. I'm so amazed at how well the Mac Pro 1.1 holds up over time. I only use OS X for my professional side (audio production), and it tears it up just fine with 9GB ram.

Is it really that big of a performance boost between the x1900xt and the 5770?

I just loaded OSX client onto my 2010 mini server the other day and have been having issues with low ram, all i am doing is running XBMC and only have 200mb free. I was looking around in "About this mac" to make sure that I really had 4gb or ram when i noticed that is says "64-bit Kernel and Extensions: NO".

I double checked in the terminal and it said i386. As far as I knew there is not two separate OSX discs for 64bit and 32bit. Why would it load 32 bit?

    Thanks!

FAIL article. Basically an uneducated promo for Android (Android will have free tethering!) that turned out to be false. In reality, all carriers are cracking down on Android devices.

Use 7-zip to extract the files from the MSI (BootCamp.msi for 32 bit and BootCamp64.msi for 64 bit). Then it's very similar to the video.

Thanks. Does this mean I need Windows in boot camp first??

Anyone know what name of the print type/technique where a glossy graphic is placed over a matte surface? They don't necessarily have different colors, it just shows different textures. Almost like thin plastic sticker is placed over the matte surface.

I've mostly seen them on book covers and product packaging, anyone know what this type of printing is called?

    Popular reasons...

    Mame, genesis, etc., emulators
Btstack to use wii controller with emulators
    Ifile file system manager
Copy clock app from iPhone to iPad
New always on mywi Bluetooth option

I say keep it stock for security reasons as long as possible ,
But those are some apps people JB for.

Not #4, The last time I did that my G5 Electrocuted me, and it wouldn't boot for a week!

I ned to get typing and do a few more classic pages! The plan is interesting, I just don't know how to work with the software well enough to help implement it!

I know even less about the software, but my Mac 512K requires a good bath every now and again.

would you happen to know what version of the apple cd extension i need to get my apple cd drive working

I think Apple CD 5.3.1 is what you want. I know it'll support a Plus, and I think it'll also run under System 6. You can find it here:
